TEACHER QUICK PLAN · 15–25 MINUTES

Color Mixing: Grade 5

Focus: Mix and record new colors using small, repeatable recipes.

Start: Make a 60-second test in the first box. Do not erase it—use it as evidence.

This Grade 5 example uses color inside a finished project. Notice the technique, then cover the image so students invent their own subject.

2TEST

Change recipe: count each color added.

Keep every first attempt.

Look for a mixture you can repeat.

Circle or point to evidence.

THE FINISHED SKILL TARGET

What students should be able to do

Mix and record new colors using small, repeatable recipes. Students should show at least two tests and one visibly improved attempt—not a finished artwork.

Materials

  • primary-color paint or colored media
  • mixing tray
  • small brush
  • recipe-recording worksheet

Demonstrate these actions

  1. Begin with the lighter color and add the darker color a little at a time.
  2. Repeat one recipe using the same number of scoops.
  3. Place mixtures side by side so differences are visible.

20-minute teaching sequence

  1. 0–3 min · Name the skill — Tell students: “Today we are practicing color, not making a finished masterpiece.”
  2. 3–7 min · Teacher demonstration — Show the three actions listed below. Keep the sample unfinished so students focus on technique rather than copying.
  3. 7–10 min · First test — Students complete Test 1 while changing one variable only.
  4. 10–14 min · Compare — Students point to, circle, or label what worked and decide what to change.
  5. 14–20 min · Improved try — Students repeat the useful choice in the larger box and intentionally improve it.
  6. Final 3 min · Check + reflect — Use the checklist, complete the sentence, and clean materials.

Useful teacher language

  • “Show me the part where you practiced color.”
  • “What did you change between your first and second attempt?”
  • “What evidence tells you that the improved try is more successful?”

Common problems and quick fixes

  • Mixtures cannot be repeated — count and record each color added.
  • Too much paint is used — demonstrate pea-sized starting amounts.
